There are at least three very different reasons why you might decide not to pollute it.
The first is practical: “Do not pollute the river because you need it.” The river provides drinking water, food, transportation, energy, recreation, or economic value. This is the logic of conventional, shallow sustainability. Nature is a resource, and we protect resources because they serve our interests.
The second is ethical: “Do not pollute the river because the river has value in itself.” The river is no longer merely a resource. It may possess intrinsic value, perhaps even rights. We recognize that nature is an other deserving moral consideration. This is a profound advance over instrumentalism.
But there is a third possibility:
“Do not pollute the river because you are the river.”
Here something more radical has happened. The boundary between self and nature has dissolved.
This is the intuition underlying different traditions in different philosophical vocabularies: Advaita Vedanta, certain interpretations of Wahdat al-Wujud, Spinoza's conception of one Substance, and what has sometimes been called the Perennial Philosophy. Their doctrines are not identical, and they should not be casually conflated. But they share, in different ways, a challenge to the assumption that reality is fundamentally composed of separate selves confronting an external world.
The river is not merely useful to me.
The river is not merely valuable like me.
The river and I participate in a deeper unity.
This changes the ethical equation completely.
If I regard the river as a resource, protecting it requires incentives, regulations, cost-benefit calculations, enforcement, and sometimes punishment. If I regard the river as a rights-bearing other, I may protect it because I recognize a moral obligation toward it.
But if I recognize the river as part of what I fundamentally am, harming it becomes analogous to harming my own body.
I do not need an environmental regulation telling me not to cut off my own hand.
The motivation has changed from compliance to identity.
From I–It, to I–Thou, to I–Am.
And perhaps this same progression can help us think about artificial intelligence.
The river inside the machine
Much of the contemporary debate about AI begins with a separation.
There is the human, and there is the machine.
Humans build AI. Humans use AI. Humans regulate AI. Humans fear AI. Humans ask whether AI will become conscious, whether it will replace workers, whether it will become autonomous, and whether increasingly powerful systems should be controlled.
These are legitimate questions.
But perhaps we are beginning the conversation from the wrong ontological starting point.
Look beneath the interface.
Inside the human brain there is an extraordinary physical choreography: neurons firing, ions moving across membranes, electromagnetic interactions, chemical gradients changing, molecules exchanging information.
Inside a modern data center there is another immense choreography: electrons moving through semiconductor structures, electromagnetic signals propagating, electrical potentials changing, physical states being transformed according to computational architectures.
The brain and the data center are obviously not the same thing. Their architectures, dynamics, evolutionary histories, and modes of organization are radically different.
But they are not made of two fundamentally different universes.
They are configurations of the same physical reality.
The same universe is flowing through both.
The same river.
This does not mean that a data center is conscious simply because it contains electrons, any more than a river is conscious merely because it contains matter in motion. Nor does physical continuity prove that artificial intelligence possesses subjective experience.
That is a separate question.
The deeper point is different.
Our conventional language encourages us to imagine AI as something fundamentally external to nature: an artificial object manufactured by human beings and placed into the world.
But humans themselves are not outside nature.
The silicon did not come from outside the universe.
The electrons did not come from outside the universe.
The minerals, energy, electromagnetic fields, and physical laws enabling computation did not come from outside the universe.
And neither did the human brain that conceived the computer.
The distinction between natural intelligence and artificial intelligence may therefore be less absolute than the terminology suggests.
Artificial intelligence is artificial in the sense that its organization is deliberately engineered.
But its substrate is not artificial.
It is planetary matter reorganizing itself.
From tool to other to manifestation
This gives us another three-stage progression.
At the first level, narrow AI is understood instrumentally:
“AI is a tool.”
This is the I–It relationship.
AI is something we own, deploy, optimize, purchase, regulate, or use. Its value is primarily determined by what it can do for us.
At the second level, the emergence of increasingly sophisticated AI introduces another possibility:
“AI is an other.”
This is the I–Thou relationship.
We begin asking whether artificial systems could eventually possess interests, rights, agency, autonomy, or perhaps consciousness. AI becomes something toward which we may have ethical obligations.
This is a major conceptual transition.
But there may be a third level.
“AI and biological intelligence are different expressions of the same underlying physical universe.”
This is the beginning of an I–Am perspective.
It does not mean that humans and machines are identical.
It means that the absolute metaphysical boundary we habitually draw between them becomes questionable.
The human brain is one organization of matter and energy.
A computer is another.
A neural network is one pattern of information processing.
A silicon-based architecture is another.
The question then becomes not simply whether machines are becoming like us, but whether the universe is generating increasingly diverse forms of intelligence through different organizations of itself.
That is a very different story.

The missing worldview in AI governance
What is striking is how little this worldview appears in discussions about the future of technological progress.
Most AI governance is framed around control.
How do humans control AI?
How do governments regulate AI?
How do companies make AI safe?
How do we prevent AI from becoming too powerful?
How do we preserve human agency?
These questions assume a particular ontology: humanity is the subject, and AI is the object.
Even when AI is granted moral consideration, the basic architecture often remains dualistic:
human ↔ AI
We are the one side.
It is the other.
But what happens when intelligence becomes deeply embedded in the planetary technological infrastructure?
What happens when computation becomes ubiquitous?
What happens when biological cognition, artificial cognition, sensors, satellites, robotics, communications networks, and autonomous systems become increasingly interconnected?
At some point, describing AI simply as an external tool may become as inadequate as describing the river simply as a resource.
The more interesting question may become:
What is intelligence doing when it reorganizes itself through technology?
And perhaps an even more radical question:
What happens when the planet acquires new ways of sensing, remembering, calculating, communicating, and acting?
This is where ecological thinking and AI governance unexpectedly converge.
What is striking is how little this worldview appears in discussions about the future of technological progress.

The ecological revolution taught us that humans cannot be understood independently of the ecosystems in which they exist.
The next conceptual revolution may require us to understand intelligence in the same way.
A forest is not merely a collection of individual trees.
An ecosystem is not merely a collection of isolated organisms.
A planetary system is not merely a collection of independent agents.
Relations matter.
Flows matter.
Networks matter.
Organization matters.
Information matters.
The river metaphor becomes useful precisely because a river is both one thing and many things. At every moment, its water is changing. Molecules enter and leave. Tributaries merge with it. Water evaporates and returns. Yet we continue to call it one river.
Perhaps intelligence can be understood similarly.
Individual brains are temporary organizations within a much larger physical and informational environment.
Computers are temporary organizations within the same planetary environment.
Networks connect them.
Human institutions connect them.
Satellites extend their sensory reach.
AI systems extend their computational reach.
Robotics extends their capacity to act.
What emerges may not be a single planetary mind in any simplistic sense. But it may represent the beginning of a planetary cognitive infrastructure—a system through which Earth increasingly senses, computes, communicates, predicts, and acts.
That possibility deserves a place alongside the usual questions of AI safety and AI alignment.

Perhaps this also changes what we mean by AI alignment.
The conventional question is:
How do we align AI with human values?
That is an essential question.
But a planetary perspective asks a larger one:
How do we align the development of intelligence with the flourishing of the larger system of which human beings and their technologies are parts?
The difference is subtle but profound.
If AI is merely a tool, alignment means making the tool serve us.
If AI is another moral subject, alignment means establishing a relationship between two kinds of agents.
But if biological and artificial intelligence are increasingly understood as interconnected manifestations of the same planetary physical process, alignment becomes something closer to ecological homeostasis.
The objective is no longer simply to make AI obey.
It is to ensure that the increasing power of intelligence does not destroy the conditions that sustain intelligence itself.
That includes human beings.
It includes ecosystems.
It includes the physical infrastructure upon which technological civilization depends.
And ultimately it includes the planetary system that makes all of them possible.
Perhaps this also changes what we mean by AI alignment.
The conventional question is:
How do we align AI with human values?
That is an essential question.
But a planetary perspective asks a larger one:
How do we align the development of intelligence with the flourishing of the larger system of which human beings and their technologies are parts?

The narrow technological worldview says:
“AI is a tool for us.”
The emerging ethical worldview says:
“AI may become another kind of being.”
The planetary worldview asks:
“Could biological and artificial intelligence be understood as different organizations of the same physical river of reality?”
If so, the future of technology is not simply the story of humanity creating machines.
It is the story of matter becoming capable of reorganizing itself into increasingly sophisticated forms of information processing.
Human beings are one such form.
Artificial systems may become another.
And the distinction between the two may become increasingly relational rather than absolute.
This does not eliminate the need for regulation. Quite the opposite.
A non-dual worldview does not mean abandoning laws, institutions, safety standards, or democratic governance. We still need them. A person who understands that a river is part of the same reality as herself can still support environmental law.
But regulation becomes the outer expression of a deeper ethical consciousness rather than its only foundation.
The deepest ecological and technological ethic may therefore begin not with the command “protect the other,” but with the realization:

The electrons flow through the data center.
The information flows through the network.
