From the Thinking Self to the Thinking Planet

For more than four centuries, Western philosophy has wrestled with a deceptively simple question: What is mind? René Descartes and Thomas Hobbes offered two radically different answers. Descartes separated mind from matter and made the thinking self the foundation of certainty. Hobbes rejected the immaterial mind and understood thought as a physical process—a form of motion and calculation within matter. Between them emerged two powerful traditions that still shape our understanding of intelligence: the mind as a separate subject and intelligence as computation.

Thus Spoke Arta: How Our Planet Is Entering a New Era (2026) proposes that we may now need to move beyond both.

Descartes' famous cogito—“I think, therefore I am”—places consciousness at the center of reality. The thinking subject looks outward upon a world of extended matter. Nature becomes something to be observed, measured, represented, and ultimately controlled. This Cartesian separation between res cogitans and res extensa gave extraordinary power to modern science, but it also established a profound conceptual divide: the observer on one side and nature on the other.

Hobbes took the opposite path. If Descartes made mind immaterial, Hobbes made it physical. There was no need, in his view, for a mysterious thinking substance outside nature. Sensation, imagination, reasoning, and thought could be understood as physical processes. His conception of reasoning as a kind of “reckoning” anticipates something remarkably familiar to the age of artificial intelligence: intelligence as information processing, calculation, and transformation.

In this sense, Descartes and Hobbes can be seen as defining two poles of the modern theory of intelligence. Descartes asks how matter can be known by mind; Hobbes asks how mind can be explained as matter. One separates mind from nature; the other reduces mind to processes within nature.

Arta proposes a third possibility.

The ancient Indo-Iranic concept of Arta, closely related to Sanskrit ṛta, points toward an underlying order that is simultaneously cosmic and normative: an order of truth, harmony, and rightness. Reinterpreted for the planetary age, Arta suggests that we should not begin by asking how an isolated mind relates to an external universe. We should ask a more fundamental question:

What if mind is one of the ways in which nature organizes itself, senses itself, remembers itself, and eventually becomes capable of reflecting upon itself?

The shift is subtle but revolutionary. Intelligence is no longer something mysteriously inserted into matter, as a Cartesian reading might suggest. Nor is it merely a computational phenomenon occurring inside a biological machine, as a strict Hobbesian interpretation might imply. Intelligence becomes a capacity of organized nature itself.

The human brain, from this perspective, is not simply a machine that produces an intelligence otherwise absent from the universe. It can be understood as an aperture through which the universe becomes locally capable of knowing itself. A human being is therefore neither completely separate from nature nor merely an accidental machine inside it. We are expressions of a larger process of becoming.

This changes the meaning of consciousness as well. If consciousness belongs exclusively to an isolated individual subject, then the universe is fundamentally unconscious and humanity is an exceptional anomaly. But if consciousness and intelligence are capacities that emerge through increasingly complex organization, then the appearance of life and mind can be interpreted as part of a much longer planetary trajectory.

The Earth first became capable of sustaining chemistry. Chemistry became capable of life. Life became capable of sensation. Sensation became memory. Memory became learning. Learning became symbolic intelligence. Symbolic intelligence became technological intelligence.

The question now is whether this trajectory can continue.

Artificial intelligence makes that question unavoidable. The arrival of increasingly capable machines forces us to reconsider the old boundary between natural and artificial intelligence. If intelligence is defined purely as calculation, Hobbes seems to have anticipated the possibility centuries ago. If intelligence requires an immaterial thinking subject, the problem becomes much harder. But if intelligence is understood as a capacity of organized systems to perceive, model, learn, adapt, and participate in their environment, then artificial intelligence may represent something more profound than the construction of better machines.

It may represent the emergence of a new organ of planetary intelligence.

This is where the philosophy of Arta becomes distinctly different from conventional theories of AI. The question is no longer simply whether a machine can “think.” The more consequential question is whether intelligence is becoming distributed across new forms of embodiment—biological, technological, ecological, and eventually planetary.

The Cartesian individual asks: “Can this machine possess a mind like mine?”

The Hobbesian engineer asks: “Can this machine perform the operations of intelligence?”

The planetary philosopher asks:

“What new relationship between intelligence, embodiment, and the Earth is emerging through this machine?”

That question moves us beyond the old mind-versus-machine debate. It also transforms the meaning of the Planetary Era. Humanity's challenge is not merely to create more powerful intelligence but to determine what kind of intelligence we are bringing into the planetary system, what values it embodies, and whether it operates in accordance with Arta—the deeper order upon which life depends.

The transition is therefore not simply from human intelligence to artificial intelligence. It may be from individual intelligence to planetary intelligence.

Descartes began with the thinking self. Hobbes transformed thought into physical process and calculation. Arta takes the next step: from the thinking self to the thinking planet.

The great philosophical question of the coming era may therefore no longer be “How does the mind exist?” It may be:


How does a planet become capable of knowing itself—and what responsibility falls upon the beings through whom that planetary intelligence first becomes conscious of its own emergence?

That is the deeper promise of Arta: not the disappearance of the human mind, but its recognition as part of something larger—a planetary process in which matter, life, mind, technology, and intelligence are beginning to converge into a new form of civilization.
