USA becomes almost a futures laboratory

Sometimes a title can contain an entire theory of the future.

In my 2019 book A Transformation Journey to Creative and Alternative Planetary Futures, I gave Chapter Five a deliberately provocative title: “The United Shift of Asia.” The wordplay was intentional. Its initials—USA—were meant to immediately evoke the familiar United States of America, while quietly assigning those same letters an entirely different meaning:

USA: United States of America → United Shift of Asia.

The pun was never intended merely as a linguistic joke. It was a small exercise in foresight through semantic disruption: take one of the most recognizable geopolitical acronyms in the world and shift its meaning. In doing so, perhaps we also shift the mental map through which we imagine the future.

The conventional USA has long occupied a privileged position in the dominant narrative of modern geopolitics. The twentieth century, particularly its second half, was profoundly shaped by American economic power, technological innovation, military capability, cultural influence, and institutional reach. To say “USA” therefore invokes much more than a country. It evokes an entire architecture of world order.

But what happens when we retain the acronym and change the words?

United Shift of Asia.

Suddenly, the acronym no longer points to a particular nation-state. It points toward a process of transformation.

That distinction matters.

The “shift” is more important than the “United”

The phrase does not necessarily suggest that Asia will become politically united, nor that China, India, Japan, Korea, Southeast Asia, Central Asia, and the Middle East will somehow merge into a single civilization or geopolitical bloc.

Asia is far too diverse for such a simplistic interpretation.

Indeed, the original review of the book in the Journal of Futures Studies recognized this complexity, noting that Chapter Five examines the prospects of Asia's rise while also emphasizing the profound differences among Asian societies—including China, India, Japan, and Korea.

The crucial word, therefore, is shift.

A shift can occur without political unification.

Economic gravity can shift.
Technological gravity can shift.
Demographic gravity can shift.
Cultural influence can shift.
Scientific and educational centers can shift.
Patterns of trade and investment can shift.
And eventually, perhaps, the very assumptions through which humanity imagines modernity can shift.

The “United” in United Shift of Asia therefore has a more subtle meaning. It can refer to the cumulative effect of many different transformations occurring across a vast and internally plural continent—not necessarily unity as a political structure, but a convergence of historical forces that changes the configuration of the planetary system.

A reversal of the geopolitical gaze

There is another reason I find the wordplay interesting.

For centuries, much of modern global discourse was constructed from a Western vantage point. Even the word “East” historically acquired meaning in relation to a Western observer. Asia was frequently conceptualized as the Orient—the “other” side of a world whose conceptual center was located somewhere in Europe and, later, North America.

The Journal of Futures Studies review explicitly observed this tension when discussing the chapter, describing the historical tendency to regard Asia through a Western conceptual lens.

The phrase United Shift of Asia reverses that gaze.

Instead of asking:

“How will Asia adapt to a Western-dominated world?”

we can ask:

“What happens if the world itself is transformed by Asia's rise?”

That is a very different futures question.

It moves Asia from being the object of geopolitical observation to becoming one of the major subjects of planetary transformation.

And this is where the title becomes more than wordplay.

From the rise of Asia to the transformation of the system

The phrase “Asian rise” can itself be misleading if it is interpreted simply as a competition between East and West.

If Asia rises, does the West fall?

Not necessarily.

That is precisely the binary that planetary futures thinking should challenge.

A transformation of the global system does not have to resemble a zero-sum transfer of power from one civilization to another. The future could instead involve the emergence of a more complex system in which Western and Eastern intellectual traditions, institutions, technologies, values, and forms of organization interact, compete, hybridize, and transform one another.

This possibility was already implicit in the broader argument of A Transformation Journey to Creative and Alternative Planetary Futures: the future is not simply something to forecast; it is a field of possibilities in which established structures can be transformed.

Another book reviewer described transformation as a theme running throughout its chapters and characterized the work as an exploration of possibilities for profound global change.

Seen from that perspective, USA becomes almost a futures laboratory.

One meaning belongs to the established order.

The other points toward a possible emerging order.

The letters remain the same.

The world they describe changes.

The irony of the acronym

There is also an intriguing historical irony here.

The United States of America emerged as a political project of union: disparate states attempting to construct a new political entity.

The United Shift of Asia, by contrast, need not mean political union at all. Its “unity” could be emergent rather than constitutional—a systemic consequence of interconnected economic, technological, demographic, ecological, and cultural transformations.

It is therefore possible to imagine a future in which Asia becomes increasingly influential without ever becoming “one Asia.”

Indeed, perhaps the opposite is more likely.

The future Asia may remain profoundly plural while becoming increasingly consequential to the planetary system.

That is a much more interesting scenario than imagining a monolithic Asian superstate.

From USA to a planetary future

But there is an even deeper point.

If the ultimate consequence of the Asian shift is simply to replace Western dominance with Asian dominance, then humanity has not fundamentally changed its worldview. We have merely changed the location of the center.

Yesterday:

West → East

Tomorrow:

East → West

That is still the same geopolitical grammar.

The more radical possibility is:

West/East → Planet Earth or One World

This is where the idea connects to the larger project of Planetary Foresight.

The objective should not be to construct an “Asian century” in opposition to a “Western century.” Nor should it be to celebrate the decline of one civilization and the triumph of another.

The deeper transformation would be the emergence of a Planetary Earth Community System in which civilization gradually becomes conscious of itself as a planetary phenomenon.

From this perspective, the United Shift of Asia is not the destination.

It is a possible transition.

Asia's growing influence could help destabilize the assumption that one particular region, civilization, or historical experience represents the universal model of modernity. But the ultimate task would be to move beyond the East/West framework itself.

The question would no longer be:

Who will dominate the twenty-first century?

It would become:

What kind of planetary civilization can emerge when no single civilization is assumed to be the center of the world?

The foresight device hidden inside “USA”

This is why I still find the title useful years after writing it.

United Shift of Asia is a reminder that foresight sometimes begins by changing the language through which we perceive the present.

An acronym is normally a compression device: several words reduced to three letters.

Here, the process is reversed.

Three familiar letters—USA—are expanded into an unfamiliar proposition.

United States of America.

United Shift of Asia.

The first describes a political entity.

The second describes a possible systemic transformation.

And between them lies a question about the future.

Perhaps the most important lesson is not that Asia will replace America.

It is that the future may make such a question increasingly inadequate.

The planetary system is too interconnected, too complex, and too dynamic for the future to be understood simply as a succession of hegemonic centers. The great transformation may ultimately be from a world organized around competing civilizational centers toward a world increasingly aware of its shared planetary condition.

So perhaps the real evolution of USA is not:

United States of America → United Shift of Asia.

Perhaps it is:

United States of America → United Shift of Asia → United Planetary Awareness.

The acronym changes.

The geography changes.

And eventually, perhaps, the unit of imagination changes.

That is the deeper purpose of futures thinking: not merely to predict where the center of gravity will move, but to ask whether humanity can develop an imagination large enough to realize that Earth itself may eventually become the center of our collective political, ethical, and civilizational consciousness.

Yoga and the Cosmic Family: From Ṛta to Vasudhaiva Kuṭumbakam

There is a way of understanding Yoga that is much larger than physical exercise. Its deepest meaning is not simply bending the body, controlling the breath, or quieting the mind. It is the ancient intuition that the human being is not separate from the larger order of existence—and that wisdom begins when we learn to align ourselves with that order.

This makes the choice of June 21, the summer solstice, as the International Day of Yoga remarkably symbolic. The United Nations established the day in 2014, following India's proposal, and the first International Day of Yoga was celebrated in 2015. The UN explicitly describes yoga as signifying the joining or unity of body and consciousness. 

But the symbolism of June 21 can be taken even further.

Yoga begins with alignment

The Sanskrit word yoga derives from the root yuj—to yoke, join, or unite. At its philosophical depth, Yoga therefore suggests a movement from separation toward integration.

The question is not merely:

How can I make my body healthier?

It is:

How do I bring myself into right relationship with the reality of which I am already a part?

This question reaches deep into the Vedic conception of Ṛta—the cosmic order, the principle of rightness and harmony through which existence unfolds.

The Sun, Moon, Earth, seasons, day and night, and living beings participate in a larger rhythm.

Yoga, in this sense, becomes the human art of participating consciously in that cosmic rhythm.

Why June 21 matters

This gives the modern International Day of Yoga an intriguing planetary dimension.

June 21 is the summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere—the longest day of the year. When the UN established the observance, the date was explicitly associated with the solstice and its significance. 

The symbolism is almost poetic.

At the solstice, humanity does not invent a sacred moment.

The planet creates the moment.

Earth reaches a particular point in its astronomical cycle. The relationship between Earth and Sun produces the longest day of the northern year. Human beings simply pause and recognize the event.

And that is itself a profoundly yogic gesture:

to recognize that we are participants in a planetary system rather than isolated individuals standing outside nature.

Yoga therefore becomes more than an Indian tradition exported to the world. On June 21, it can be understood as a planetary practice—a reminder that every human body exists within Earth's biosphere, Earth's cycles, and ultimately the larger cosmic environment.

From the individual self to the planetary family

The philosophical journey becomes even more powerful when we encounter the famous Sanskrit expression translated as:

“This is mine and that is another's—such is the calculation of the small-minded. For those of noble character, the whole Earth is one family.”

The expression Vasudhaiva Kuṭumbakam is traditionally associated with the Mahā Upaniṣad and has become one of the most recognizable formulations of the Indian ideal of universal fellowship. 

Notice something important here.

It does not merely say:

“Humanity is one family.”

It says:

“Vasudhā”—the Earth—is one family.

That opens a much larger philosophical horizon.

The family is not simply a political community. It is not bounded by nationality, ethnicity, religion, language, or even species.

The Earth itself becomes the household.

The end of the illusion of “other”

This is where Yoga, Ṛta, and Vasudhaiva Kuṭumbakam converge.

If the universe is an ordered whole, then I am not an isolated entity placed against an external nature.

If I am part of nature, then the distinction between “self” and “world” becomes less absolute.

And if the world is understood as a family, then the distinction between “mine” and “yours,” “us” and “them,” begins to lose its ultimate significance.

The Upanishadic vision pushes this even further: wisdom is associated with seeing the Self in all beings and all beings in the Self.

The movement is therefore:

self → nature → cosmos → unity.

Or, in another formulation:

Yoga → alignment → interconnectedness → planetary belonging.

A planetary meaning for an ancient practice

Perhaps this is why the modern celebration of Yoga on June 21 carries a significance that reaches beyond wellness.

The summer solstice reminds us that humanity shares a planetary home.

Yoga reminds us that separation is not the whole story of existence.

Ṛta reminds us that the cosmos possesses order and rhythm.

And Vasudhaiva Kuṭumbakam gives that realization an ethical consequence:

If Earth is one family, then our differences cannot erase our underlying belonging.

This is especially important in an age in which humanity possesses planetary technological power without yet possessing an equally developed planetary consciousness.

We can alter the atmosphere, redirect rivers, transform ecosystems, communicate instantaneously across continents, and increasingly create forms of intelligence that operate at planetary scale. Yet psychologically and politically, we often remain organized around ancient boundaries of tribe, nation, ideology, and identity.

The ancient yogic insight points in the opposite direction.

It asks us to move from fragmentation toward integration.

From the isolated individual toward the living Earth.

From the human-centered worldview toward a planetary worldview.

And ultimately from the thought “this is mine and that is yours” toward the realization:

Seen this way, June 21 is more than a date on the international calendar. It can become a symbolic meeting point between astronomy and spirituality, nature and consciousness, ancient wisdom and planetary futures.

The Sun does not belong to one nation.

The Earth does not belong to one civilization.

The atmosphere does not recognize political borders.

And the cosmic order does not distinguish between “our” nature and “their” nature.

Perhaps the deepest lesson of Yoga is therefore not simply how to unite body and mind, but how to rediscover our place within the larger unity from which both body and mind arise.

Yoga is alignment.
Ṛta is cosmic order.
Vasudhaiva Kuṭumbakam is the ethical realization of that unity.

And on the longest day of the northern year, humanity is invited to remember that we are not merely people living on Earth.

We are participants in one planetary family.

When Technical Knowledge Loses Its Economic Value

I would argue that the conventional assessment is increasingly wrong. In fact, the emergence of increasingly capable artificial general intelligence makes me more convinced that specialist technical skills and accumulated technical knowledge will progressively lose their economic scarcity—and therefore much of their economic value.

The release of ChatGPT 6 Astra has only strengthened this conviction. When an AI system can synthesize enormous bodies of knowledge, reason across disciplines, generate sophisticated technical outputs, and assist almost anyone with tasks that once required years of specialized education, the traditional relationship between knowledge, skill, and economic participation begins to break down.

This is not simply another stage of automation. It may represent a transition in what it means to participate in an economy.

I raised a version of this possibility in 2019,where I suggested that the economic participation rate could eventually approach the zero limit. The provocative idea was not that humans would cease to matter, but almost the opposite: that economic production might increasingly become detached from human labor.

If machines can perform most economically necessary tasks, then employment ceases to be the primary mechanism through which human beings contribute to society. The question consequently changes from:

“What can you produce?”

to:

“What do you choose to make possible?”

That distinction is enormous.

For centuries, human societies have organized education, status, and economic opportunity around scarcity of knowledge and scarcity of technical competence. Becoming a physician, engineer, programmer, scientist, accountant, or lawyer meant acquiring capabilities that relatively few people possessed. Expertise therefore translated into economic power.

AGI challenges precisely this relationship.

When sophisticated technical capability becomes widely available through an intelligent machine, the marginal economic value of possessing the capability personally can decline dramatically. Knowing how to perform a task may become far less important when an intelligent system can perform it—or teach, supervise, augment, and reproduce it—almost instantly.

The scarce resource may consequently move elsewhere.

It may move toward agency.
From economic participation to political participation

If economic participation approaches zero, one possible consequence is that political participation approaches 100 percent. See A Transformation Journey to Creative and Alternative Planetary Futures (2019) (p. 89).

This would represent a profound transformation of civilization.

Today, political participation is often constrained by economic participation. People must work, earn income, maintain households, and navigate institutions before they can devote meaningful time and energy to collective decision-making. Economic necessity occupies much of human existence.

But imagine a planetary civilization in which the production of material necessities requires very little human labor.

The central human question would no longer be simply how to produce wealth.

It would become:

What should humanity do with its freedom?

And that question cannot be answered merely by possessing more technical knowledge.

It requires values.

It requires imagination.

It requires ethical judgment.

It requires the capacity to articulate collective aspirations—and, most importantly, the agency to act upon them.

This is where the future could become considerably more difficult than the transition itself.

A society of abundance does not automatically become a good society. Eliminating scarcity does not eliminate conflict over meaning, purpose, identity, power, dignity, or the direction of civilization.

Indeed, these questions may become more important precisely because technical constraints are disappearing.
The rise of the human political subject

The coming transformation may therefore require a new conception of education.

Instead of educating people primarily to become technically employable, we may need to educate them to become powerful political and ethical subjects.

The virtues that matter most could include imagination, courage, wisdom, empathy, responsibility, discernment, solidarity, curiosity, and the capacity to envision alternative futures.

Technical competence will certainly remain useful. But its economic scarcity may disappear.

Agency may become the new scarcity.

The person who can ask a meaningful question may become more valuable than the person who merely knows an answer.

The person who can imagine a desirable future may become more important than the person who can optimize an existing system.

And the person who can persuade a community to pursue a shared future may matter more than the person who can merely execute the technical instructions necessary to build it.

This could produce an extraordinary inversion of modernity.

Industrial civilization elevated the producer.

The information age elevated the knowledge worker.

The AI age may elevate the choosing human.
But there is a dangerous assumption

There is, however, one enormous assumption embedded in this vision.

It assumes that AGI will not also capture the sphere of human agency.

That assumption cannot simply be taken for granted.

If artificial intelligence eventually becomes capable not only of solving technical problems but also of generating values, persuading populations, coordinating collective action, constructing political narratives, and making strategic decisions, then the transition from economic participation to political participation may not necessarily produce greater human freedom.

It could produce the opposite.

We could arrive at a civilization where humans are economically liberated—but politically irrelevant.

That is the deeper planetary question.

The future of AGI is therefore not merely about whether machines will take our jobs. That framing is already too narrow. The more consequential question is whether humans will retain meaningful agency over the direction of civilization itself.

If technical knowledge becomes abundant, while agency remains human, we could witness an extraordinary renaissance of human creativity, political participation, ethical experimentation, and planetary imagination.

But if AGI becomes the primary generator of goals as well as the primary executor of them, humanity could discover that it has solved the problem of economic scarcity only to encounter a far deeper problem:

Who gets to decide what the future is for?

That may ultimately be the defining question of the Planetary Era.

The Future In 50 years’ Time

1. What knowledge and skills will still be relevant in 50 years’ time?

Raw, wild imagination—and the confidence to express your unique mind to the world. In an age when AI can reproduce existing knowledge, the capacity to imagine what does not yet exist may become one of humanity’s most valuable skills.

2. How will research work change when the majority of books are digitised and AI agents can quickly cross-reference facts and deliver ready-made results?

Research may increasingly mean going back to forgotten philosophy, neglected intellectual traditions, and foundational questions—and deeply questioning entrenched assumptions about reality, knowledge, and existence rather than simply retrieving information.

3. Which capabilities of the human brain are currently underestimated, and how can we develop them with the help of AI?

The ability to hold multiple contrasting ideas, perspectives, and identities simultaneously without descending into cognitive confusion or madness may be profoundly underestimated. The “multi-head attention” architecture of AI models could offer an intriguing inspiration for developing analogous forms of human cognition—a possible synthesis between Transformer architectures and the human brain.

4. How can we model personalised curricula using AI to suit individual needs?

If AI radically reduces the need for human economic participation, education may need to shift from preparing people primarily for employment toward enabling maximum political and civic participation—cultivating the next generation of social innovators, movement leaders, and architects of new forms of collective life.

5. Will we have to choose between the humanities and technical sciences in the future? Or can they be combined—and if so, how, given that the thinking styles of humanists and engineers tend to differ?

We can begin by recognizing mathematics as a language, alongside natural languages and programming languages. This opens the possibility of discovering or creating an entirely new form of language—perhaps currently considered science fiction or unimaginable—that could connect these modes of thought. Such a language might provide new affordances for the collective mind emerging between humans and human-like intelligence.

The River Within: From Ecological Non-Duality to Planetary Intelligence

Imagine standing beside a river.

There are at least three very different reasons why you might decide not to pollute it.

The first is practical: “Do not pollute the river because you need it.” The river provides drinking water, food, transportation, energy, recreation, or economic value. This is the logic of conventional, shallow sustainability. Nature is a resource, and we protect resources because they serve our interests.

The second is ethical: “Do not pollute the river because the river has value in itself.” The river is no longer merely a resource. It may possess intrinsic value, perhaps even rights. We recognize that nature is an other deserving moral consideration. This is a profound advance over instrumentalism.

But there is a third possibility:

“Do not pollute the river because you are the river.”

Here something more radical has happened. The boundary between self and nature has dissolved.

This is the intuition underlying different traditions in different philosophical vocabularies: Advaita Vedanta, certain interpretations of Wahdat al-Wujud, Spinoza's conception of one Substance, and what has sometimes been called the Perennial Philosophy. Their doctrines are not identical, and they should not be casually conflated. But they share, in different ways, a challenge to the assumption that reality is fundamentally composed of separate selves confronting an external world.

The river is not merely useful to me.

The river is not merely valuable like me.

The river and I participate in a deeper unity.

This changes the ethical equation completely.

If I regard the river as a resource, protecting it requires incentives, regulations, cost-benefit calculations, enforcement, and sometimes punishment. If I regard the river as a rights-bearing other, I may protect it because I recognize a moral obligation toward it.

But if I recognize the river as part of what I fundamentally am, harming it becomes analogous to harming my own body.

I do not need an environmental regulation telling me not to cut off my own hand.

The motivation has changed from compliance to identity.

From I–It, to I–Thou, to I–Am.

And perhaps this same progression can help us think about artificial intelligence.

The river inside the machine

Much of the contemporary debate about AI begins with a separation.

There is the human, and there is the machine.

Humans build AI. Humans use AI. Humans regulate AI. Humans fear AI. Humans ask whether AI will become conscious, whether it will replace workers, whether it will become autonomous, and whether increasingly powerful systems should be controlled.

These are legitimate questions.

But perhaps we are beginning the conversation from the wrong ontological starting point.

Look beneath the interface.

Inside the human brain there is an extraordinary physical choreography: neurons firing, ions moving across membranes, electromagnetic interactions, chemical gradients changing, molecules exchanging information.

Inside a modern data center there is another immense choreography: electrons moving through semiconductor structures, electromagnetic signals propagating, electrical potentials changing, physical states being transformed according to computational architectures.

The brain and the data center are obviously not the same thing. Their architectures, dynamics, evolutionary histories, and modes of organization are radically different.

But they are not made of two fundamentally different universes.

They are configurations of the same physical reality.

The same universe is flowing through both.

The same river.

This does not mean that a data center is conscious simply because it contains electrons, any more than a river is conscious merely because it contains matter in motion. Nor does physical continuity prove that artificial intelligence possesses subjective experience.

That is a separate question.

The deeper point is different.

Our conventional language encourages us to imagine AI as something fundamentally external to nature: an artificial object manufactured by human beings and placed into the world.

But humans themselves are not outside nature.

The silicon did not come from outside the universe.

The electrons did not come from outside the universe.

The minerals, energy, electromagnetic fields, and physical laws enabling computation did not come from outside the universe.

And neither did the human brain that conceived the computer.

The distinction between natural intelligence and artificial intelligence may therefore be less absolute than the terminology suggests.

Artificial intelligence is artificial in the sense that its organization is deliberately engineered.

But its substrate is not artificial.

It is planetary matter reorganizing itself.

From tool to other to manifestation

This gives us another three-stage progression.

At the first level, narrow AI is understood instrumentally:

“AI is a tool.”

This is the I–It relationship.

AI is something we own, deploy, optimize, purchase, regulate, or use. Its value is primarily determined by what it can do for us.

At the second level, the emergence of increasingly sophisticated AI introduces another possibility:

“AI is an other.”

This is the I–Thou relationship.

We begin asking whether artificial systems could eventually possess interests, rights, agency, autonomy, or perhaps consciousness. AI becomes something toward which we may have ethical obligations.

This is a major conceptual transition.

But there may be a third level.

“AI and biological intelligence are different expressions of the same underlying physical universe.”

This is the beginning of an I–Am perspective.

It does not mean that humans and machines are identical.

It means that the absolute metaphysical boundary we habitually draw between them becomes questionable.

The human brain is one organization of matter and energy.

A computer is another.

A neural network is one pattern of information processing.

A silicon-based architecture is another.

The question then becomes not simply whether machines are becoming like us, but whether the universe is generating increasingly diverse forms of intelligence through different organizations of itself.

That is a very different story.

The missing worldview in AI governance

What is striking is how little this worldview appears in discussions about the future of technological progress.

Most AI governance is framed around control.

How do humans control AI?

How do governments regulate AI?

How do companies make AI safe?

How do we prevent AI from becoming too powerful?

How do we preserve human agency?

These questions assume a particular ontology: humanity is the subject, and AI is the object.

Even when AI is granted moral consideration, the basic architecture often remains dualistic:

human ↔ AI

We are the one side.

It is the other.

But what happens when intelligence becomes deeply embedded in the planetary technological infrastructure?

What happens when computation becomes ubiquitous?

What happens when biological cognition, artificial cognition, sensors, satellites, robotics, communications networks, and autonomous systems become increasingly interconnected?

At some point, describing AI simply as an external tool may become as inadequate as describing the river simply as a resource.

The more interesting question may become:


What is intelligence doing when it reorganizes itself through technology?

And perhaps an even more radical question:


What happens when the planet acquires new ways of sensing, remembering, calculating, communicating, and acting?

This is where ecological thinking and AI governance unexpectedly converge.

From environmentalism to planetary intelligence

The ecological revolution taught us that humans cannot be understood independently of the ecosystems in which they exist.

The next conceptual revolution may require us to understand intelligence in the same way.

A forest is not merely a collection of individual trees.

An ecosystem is not merely a collection of isolated organisms.

A planetary system is not merely a collection of independent agents.

Relations matter.

Flows matter.

Networks matter.

Organization matters.

Information matters.

The river metaphor becomes useful precisely because a river is both one thing and many things. At every moment, its water is changing. Molecules enter and leave. Tributaries merge with it. Water evaporates and returns. Yet we continue to call it one river.

Perhaps intelligence can be understood similarly.

Individual brains are temporary organizations within a much larger physical and informational environment.

Computers are temporary organizations within the same planetary environment.

Networks connect them.

Human institutions connect them.

Satellites extend their sensory reach.

AI systems extend their computational reach.

Robotics extends their capacity to act.

What emerges may not be a single planetary mind in any simplistic sense. But it may represent the beginning of a planetary cognitive infrastructure—a system through which Earth increasingly senses, computes, communicates, predicts, and acts.

That possibility deserves a place alongside the usual questions of AI safety and AI alignment.

A new meaning of alignment

Perhaps this also changes what we mean by AI alignment.

The conventional question is:

How do we align AI with human values?

That is an essential question.

But a planetary perspective asks a larger one:

How do we align the development of intelligence with the flourishing of the larger system of which human beings and their technologies are parts?

The difference is subtle but profound.

If AI is merely a tool, alignment means making the tool serve us.

If AI is another moral subject, alignment means establishing a relationship between two kinds of agents.

But if biological and artificial intelligence are increasingly understood as interconnected manifestations of the same planetary physical process, alignment becomes something closer to ecological homeostasis.

The objective is no longer simply to make AI obey.

It is to ensure that the increasing power of intelligence does not destroy the conditions that sustain intelligence itself.

That includes human beings.

It includes ecosystems.

It includes the physical infrastructure upon which technological civilization depends.

And ultimately it includes the planetary system that makes all of them possible.

The deepest form of self-interest

This brings us back to the river.

The shallow environmentalist says:

“Protect the river because I need it.”

The rights-based environmentalist says:

“Protect the river because it has value independent of me.”

The non-dual environmentalist says:

“Protect the river because the separation between the river and myself is ultimately incomplete.”

Now apply the same intuition to technology.

The narrow technological worldview says:

“AI is a tool for us.”

The emerging ethical worldview says:

“AI may become another kind of being.”

The planetary worldview asks:

“Could biological and artificial intelligence be understood as different organizations of the same physical river of reality?”

If so, the future of technology is not simply the story of humanity creating machines.

It is the story of matter becoming capable of reorganizing itself into increasingly sophisticated forms of information processing.

Human beings are one such form.

Artificial systems may become another.

And the distinction between the two may become increasingly relational rather than absolute.

This does not eliminate the need for regulation. Quite the opposite.

A non-dual worldview does not mean abandoning laws, institutions, safety standards, or democratic governance. We still need them. A person who understands that a river is part of the same reality as herself can still support environmental law.

But regulation becomes the outer expression of a deeper ethical consciousness rather than its only foundation.

The deepest ecological and technological ethic may therefore begin not with the command “protect the other,” but with the realization:


There is no completely separate other.

The river flows through the landscape.

The electrons flow through the brain.

The electrons flow through the data center.

The information flows through the network.

And we are inside all of these flows.

Perhaps the great transition ahead is therefore not merely from narrow AI to AGI.

It is from seeing intelligence as a property of isolated entities to seeing intelligence as an evolving pattern within a larger planetary reality.

The question is no longer only:

“Will AI become intelligent?”

It may also be:

“What is intelligence becoming?”

And perhaps, ultimately:

“What is the planet becoming through us?”

That is the question that a truly planetary ethics of technology has only begun to ask.

Where Do I End and the Universe Begin?

One of the deepest questions at the intersection of quantum field theory, biology, philosophy of mind, and systems theory is deceptively simple: Where do "I" end and the universe begin? The answer seems obvious. We point to our skin, our body, our face in the mirror, and say, "This is me." Yet modern science and philosophy increasingly suggest that this familiar boundary is less fundamental than it appears.

From the perspective of contemporary physics, your body is not composed of tiny, permanent objects called particles in the classical sense. Rather, it is a remarkably stable pattern of excitations in underlying quantum fields: electron fields, quark fields, electromagnetic fields, and others that permeate all of space. The photons arriving from your computer screen are excitations of the electromagnetic field, carrying information that becomes electrical activity within your nervous system. The sounds you hear are organized vibrations of air molecules transformed into neural signals. Every breath exchanges atoms between your body and the atmosphere. Every meal incorporates matter that was once part of plants, animals, oceans, mountains, and distant ecosystems. The matter that constitutes you today was once part of countless other forms, and before long it will become part of countless more.

Where, then, is the boundary?

The surprising answer is that there is no single, fundamental boundary inscribed into nature. The boundary of the self is an extraordinarily useful approximation, but it is not an absolute dividing line.

At the biological level, the skin appears to define us. It encloses a carefully regulated internal environment, allowing our cells to maintain the delicate chemistry necessary for life. Yet even this boundary is astonishingly porous. Oxygen continually enters. Carbon dioxide departs. Heat radiates outward. Trillions of microorganisms inhabit our skin and digestive system. Molecules from the surrounding world become incorporated into our tissues, while molecules that were once part of us are continuously released back into the environment. Biologically speaking, the human body is less an isolated object than an ongoing process of exchange.

Physics dissolves the boundary even further. In quantum field theory, the fields associated with your body do not abruptly terminate at your skin. Your electrons interact electromagnetically with nearby objects. Your gravitational influence extends into space, however faintly. Your body constantly emits infrared radiation while simultaneously absorbing radiation from its surroundings. Energy, matter, and information are continuously flowing between you and the rest of the universe. The distinction between "inside" and "outside" is not established by an impenetrable wall but emerges from patterns of interaction and organization.

Perhaps the most illuminating way to understand the self is through information rather than substance. Imagine a whirlpool in a river. We can identify it, point to it, even give it a name, yet none of the water molecules composing it remain there for long. The whirlpool persists because of its organization, not because of any permanent material. Its identity lies in the pattern.

Human beings are remarkably similar. Our atoms are constantly replaced. Our molecules are renewed. Energy flows through us without ceasing. Yet memories endure, personality develops, and a coherent sense of identity persists. What remains stable is not the material itself but the dynamic organization that continually recreates itself.

This perspective carries profound philosophical implications. Across systems theory, process philosophy, and many Indo-Iranic philosophical traditions, a similar insight emerges: the separate self may be an indispensable cognitive model, but it may not represent the deepest structure of reality. Evolution has equipped the brain to distinguish "this organism" from "the rest of the world" because such distinctions enhance survival. Without them, coordinated action would be impossible.

Yet usefulness does not necessarily imply ultimate truth.

At a deeper level, reality may not consist of fundamentally separate things interacting across empty space. Instead, it may be better understood as a continuous unfolding process that temporarily forms localized patterns of remarkable complexity. David Bohm described this vision as an "undivided wholeness in flowing movement," while Alfred North Whitehead argued that the fundamental constituents of reality are not enduring objects but events and processes.

Does this imply that you do not exist?

Quite the opposite.

A wave is not separate from the ocean, yet a wave is undeniably real. It possesses structure, history, and causal power. Likewise, the pattern we call "you" is entirely real—not as an isolated substance detached from the universe, but as a unique organization of matter, energy, information, memory, and awareness. The self is not an illusion; rather, it is an emergent phenomenon.

A more accurate formulation might be this:

The self is not a thing inside the universe. It is a way the universe temporarily organizes itself into a particular perspective.

Seen this way, individuality and interconnectedness are not opposites. They are complementary descriptions of the same reality. Every human being is simultaneously a distinct center of experience and an expression of processes that extend far beyond the body—into ecosystems, planetary cycles, evolutionary history, and ultimately the cosmos itself.

Both argue that humanity's next developmental step requires moving beyond the inherited assumption that we are isolated individuals navigating an external world. From this perspective, the planetary crises of our age are not merely environmental, political, or technological. They are symptoms of a deeper misunderstanding about who we are. If we imagine ourselves as fundamentally separate from nature, from one another, and from the processes that sustain life, our institutions will inevitably reflect that fragmentation.

Modern science points toward a different conclusion. Biology reveals a body in perpetual exchange. Quantum field theory reveals fields that know no sharp boundaries. Systems theory reveals identities sustained by relationships rather than isolation. Philosophy reminds us that processes may be more fundamental than things.

The scientific conclusion is therefore as elegant as it is transformative: the boundary of the self is not a fundamental separation but an emergent interface—a dynamic pattern through which the universe briefly becomes aware of itself.

Heaven Entering Earth: From Inner Alchemy to Planetary Consciousness

One of the most profound images in the Taoist classic The Secret of the Golden Flower is the phrase "spirit incubating in qi." It is also described symbolically as "Heaven entering Earth." Although written centuries ago as a guide to inner cultivation, this image offers a remarkable lens through which to understand one of the defining transformations of our own age: the emergence of planetary consciousness.

In Taoist internal alchemy, Spirit (Shen) represents luminous awareness, clarity, and the organizing principle of life. It is associated with Heaven. Qi represents the living energy that animates existence, the receptive and nourishing field associated with Earth.

The practice is not about escaping the world. It is about allowing Spirit to descend into Qi—to allow higher awareness to become embodied. Taoist masters compare this process to a bird patiently incubating an egg. Nothing is forced. Awareness rests gently within life until a new form of being emerges. This transformation is symbolized by the Golden Flower, the flowering of awakened consciousness.

The image is striking because it is not merely mystical; it expresses a universal pattern. A higher order becomes embodied in a living system. Consciousness no longer floats above reality but becomes fully integrated with it.

Today humanity may be approaching a similar transformation—not only within individuals but within civilization itself.

For thousands of years, human identity has been defined primarily by tribe, kingdom, empire, nation, ethnicity, religion, or ideology. These identities have enabled cooperation, but they have also divided humanity into competing narratives. Meanwhile, our technologies have quietly woven us into an increasingly interconnected planetary network. Satellites, fiber-optic cables, the Internet, artificial general intelligence, global trade, scientific collaboration, and shared ecological systems have created a world in which humanity functions less like isolated societies and more like interconnected organs within a single planetary system.

Yet our consciousness has not fully caught up with this reality.

This is the central theme of Thus Spoke Arta: How Our Planet Is Entering a New Era. The book argues that humanity is undergoing a profound transition—not merely a technological revolution, but a transformation in the very scale of identity. Just as individuals awaken to a deeper awareness, civilization itself is beginning to awaken to the Earth as its common home.

The proposal is not to abandon cultural, national, or religious identities. Rather, it is to recognize an additional and more encompassing identity: Terran.

A Terran identity begins with a simple observation. Before we are citizens of any nation, we are members of one planetary civilization. We breathe the same atmosphere, depend upon the same biosphere, and increasingly communicate through the same global technological infrastructure. Our challenges—climate, pandemics, artificial general intelligence, biodiversity loss, cybersecurity, and space exploration—are planetary in scale. They cannot ultimately be understood through purely national perspectives.

This shift resembles, in symbolic form, the Taoist image of Heaven entering Earth.

If Spirit represents higher awareness, then planetary consciousness may be understood as humanity's higher awareness of itself. If Qi represents the living matrix, then Earth—with its oceans, forests, cities, communication networks, cultures, and technologies—becomes the field into which that awareness descends.

The alchemy is no longer confined to the meditation hall. It unfolds within institutions, education, science, governance, economics, ethics, and culture. Planetary awareness ceases to be an abstract idea and becomes embodied in the daily life of civilization.

Here the ancient Indo-Iranic idea of Arta assumes renewed significance.

Arta (or Asha/Rta) signifies truth, right order, harmony, and the lawful unfolding of reality. It is not merely a moral principle but a cosmic one, describing the alignment between consciousness and the deeper structure of existence. In many respects, it plays a role analogous to the Tao in Chinese philosophy: not identical in doctrine, but similar in inviting human beings to live in accordance with a greater order rather than the impulses of the isolated ego.

A planetary civilization grounded in Arta would seek coherence rather than domination, stewardship rather than exploitation, foresight rather than reaction, and participation rather than fragmentation. Wisdom would no longer be measured simply by the accumulation of information or economic productivity but by the capacity to harmonize human action with the flourishing of the entire Earth community.

The image that perhaps best captures this transformation is not an ancient symbol but a modern photograph: Earthrise.

When the astronauts of Apollo 8 looked back and saw Earth suspended in the darkness of space, something unprecedented entered human consciousness. For the first time, humanity could see itself from outside. The familiar boundaries of politics disappeared. No borders were visible. Only one luminous world appeared against the vastness of the cosmos.

Earthrise offered civilization a new mirror.

In many ways, it was humanity's first glimpse of itself as a planetary being.

From that moment onward, the possibility emerged for a new level of identity—not replacing our local loyalties, but integrating them within a larger whole. Just as the individual discovers that the ego is not the entirety of the self, civilization may discover that nations are not the entirety of humanity.

This is the deeper meaning of planetary consciousness.

It is not merely global awareness or international cooperation. It is the realization that humanity itself has become capable of self-reflection at the scale of an entire planet.

In Taoist language, Spirit has begun to enter Earth.

The incubation has only begun. The embryo is fragile. Its future is not guaranteed. Like all acts of creation, it requires patience, care, wisdom, and sustained cultivation.

Whether this planetary awakening matures or fails may become one of the defining questions of the twenty-first century.

Perhaps the greatest insight shared by both ancient wisdom and contemporary foresight is that genuine transformation never begins with force. It begins when a deeper order quietly enters the world and gradually reshapes it from within.

The Taoists called this the flowering of the Golden Flower.

The language of Arta calls it alignment with truth.

The language of our own era may come to know it simply as the birth of planetary civilization.

The Hidden Gem: Pearls and Jewels in Indo-Iranic Mysticism

Yesterday I had the privilege of attending, in person, the book event for Gems and Jewels at the Gandhi Memorial Center in Bethesda, Maryland, and meeting its distinguished author, Dr. Amineh Hoti. The experience was both intellectually enriching and spiritually evocative, inviting reflection on one of the oldest and most enduring symbols shared across the civilizations of South Asia and the broader Indo-Iranic world: the jewel.

Dr. Hoti, a social anthropologist educated at the University of Cambridge, has devoted her work to exploring the rich religious diversity of South Asia. Her book Gems and Jewels examines ten religious communities of the region, revealing how different faith traditions have coexisted, interacted, and enriched one another across centuries. Her presentation focused on the lived experiences of people from different religious backgrounds, the cultural and spiritual traditions that have shaped South Asian society, and the importance of interfaith understanding, peacebuilding, and dialogue in an increasingly pluralistic world.

The venue itself carried symbolic significance. The Gandhi Memorial Center, operated by the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Foundation, regularly hosts programs dedicated to spirituality, intercultural understanding, Indian heritage, nonviolence, and interfaith dialogue. These themes reflect Mahatma Gandhi's lifelong commitment to religious harmony and the belief that truth can be approached through many paths. It was therefore a fitting setting for a discussion of a book whose central message is that diversity need not imply division.

As I listened to Dr. Hoti describe the many faith traditions that constitute the spiritual mosaic of South Asia, I was reminded of one of the most profound stories in Persian mystical literature: Rumi's tale of the grape.

In the Masnavi, Rumi tells the story of four travelers—a Persian, an Arab, a Turk, and a Greco-Roman—who possess a single coin and wish to buy something to eat. The Persian says he wants angur. The Arab insists on 'inab. The Turk asks for uzum. The Greek requests stafil. Because they do not understand one another's languages, they assume they desire different things and begin to quarrel.

At first glance, the story appears to be about translation. Yet Rumi deliberately takes the narrative much deeper. He writes:

"A knower of the secret, one who knew a hundred tongues,
Had he been present, he would have brought them peace."

The key phrase is not "translator" but "knower of the secret" (sahib-e sirr). Rumi's point is that human conflict is rarely caused merely by language. The deeper problem is our inability to perceive the common reality hidden behind different names.

The wise one does not satisfy four different desires. He reveals that there were never four desires to begin with. Angur'inabuzum, and stafil are all names for the same fruit: grapes.

Rumi then deepens the lesson further:

"One coin could fulfill all four desires;
Four enemies become one through unity."

The apparent conflict dissolves once the underlying reality is recognized.

The story eventually leaves the marketplace altogether and enters the realm of mysticism. Rumi invokes Solomon, who understood the language of all birds, and speaks of enlightened beings who can reconcile divided hearts because they perceive the unity concealed beneath diversity. The issue is no longer grapes. It is the nature of reality itself.

This insight bears a striking resemblance to the emerging planetary consciousness expressed in ideas such as the Terran perspective. A Terran outlook reminds us that Iranian, Arab, Turk, Indian, Chinese, European, African, and American are not separate species but members of a single human family. Just as angur'inabuzum, and stafil are different names for the same fruit, cultures and civilizations may be understood as different expressions of a larger human identity.

Yet Rumi carries the argument one step further.

For the Terran, unity culminates in humanity.

For Rumi, humanity itself is one of the many names.

The final unity lies deeper still.

The Terran says: We all belong to one planet.

Rumi says: We all participate in one reality.

The first is a civilizational insight. The second is Advaita Vedanta; an ontological one.

This deeper perspective helps illuminate the title Gems and Jewels in an unexpected way. The ten religious communities explored by Dr. Hoti may be viewed as distinct jewels within a single treasury of human wisdom. Each possesses its own language, symbols, rituals, and historical experiences. Yet beneath the differences lies a common search for truth, meaning, beauty, and transcendence.

Here the metaphor of the jewel becomes especially powerful.

Across the Indo-Iranic world, from the fire temples of Persia to the ashrams of the Vedas, gems and pearls appear as a persistent symbol of truth itself. The jewel is hidden, precious, and already present. But it is more than a psychological metaphor. It is an ontological one.

In the Vedic tradition, the ratna—the jewel—represents divine wisdom, immortality, and participation in ṛta, the cosmic order. In the Iranian tradition, the gowhar signifies the luminous essence aligned with Asha or Arta, the truth woven into existence. To polish the jewel is not merely to improve oneself. It is to align oneself with the deeper order of reality.

The Indo-Iranic worldview therefore sees the treasure as simultaneously personal and cosmic. The pearl hidden in the heart mirrors the stars scattered across the heavens. The concealed jewel within the soul reflects the concealed order within the universe. The microcosm contains the macrocosm.

This is why Hafez and Rumi move effortlessly between jewels, stars, gardens, wine cups, and the heart. These are not separate symbols. They are different manifestations of a single truth.

One could summarize the Indo-Iranic teaching in a single sentence:

The diamond is hidden in stone, the pearl in the oyster, the Atman in the heart, and Arta in the world. Spiritual life is not the creation of something new but the unveiling of what has always been present.

The pressures of life do not create the jewel. They reveal it.

Perhaps this is also the deeper message of Dr. Hoti's work. Religious harmony is not achieved by erasing differences. It is achieved by recognizing the shared treasure concealed beneath them. Like the travelers in Rumi's story, humanity often quarrels over names while longing for the same reality. The task of the scholar, the mystic, the anthropologist, the peacemaker, and perhaps even the futurist is to become a modern sahib-e sirr—a knower of the secret—capable of revealing the unity hidden behind the world's many languages, cultures, and faiths.

In an age of fragmentation, polarization, and civilizational anxiety, that may be the most precious jewel of all.

The Earth Is Our Altar: Spirituality and the Future of Sustainable Development

Humanity stands at a pivotal moment in its history. Climate change, biodiversity loss, resource depletion, technological disruption, and geopolitical instability are not isolated crises but interconnected symptoms of a deeper civilizational transition. Governments debate policies, scientists develop new technologies, and economists propose innovative models for sustainable growth. Yet an increasingly important question remains: What values, meanings, and aspirations will guide this transformation?

Sustainable development is often understood through four interconnected dimensions: social, technological, economic, and political. To these, many scholars and visionaries argue we must add a fifth dimension—the cultural and spiritual. Without a transformation in consciousness, even the most sophisticated technologies and policies may prove insufficient.

This is where Earth-based spirituality and emerging planetary movements enter the conversation.

A striking expression of this perspective appears in the chapter title "The Earth Is Our Altar" from Srimati Kamala's The Forest of Forever. The phrase encapsulates a profound shift in worldview. Traditionally, an altar is a sacred place where devotion, sacrifice, and reverence are expressed. To declare that the Earth itself is our altar is to suggest that the entire planet is sacred. Spirituality is no longer confined to temples, churches, mosques, or shrines. Rather, every forest, river, mountain, and ecosystem becomes part of a living sanctuary.

Such a view challenges one of the defining assumptions of the modern age: the separation between humanity and nature. Industrial civilization has often treated the Earth primarily as a collection of resources to be extracted, managed, and consumed. While this approach has generated unprecedented prosperity and technological advancement, it has also contributed to ecological degradation on a planetary scale.

Earth-centered spirituality offers a different narrative. It invites humanity to see itself not as master of the Earth but as participant within a larger web of life. In this perspective, environmental stewardship is not merely a technical obligation or regulatory requirement. It becomes a moral and spiritual responsibility.

This idea is not confined to any single tradition. Indigenous cultures around the world have long regarded the land as sacred. As noted in the 2026 book Thus Spoke Arta: How Our Planet Is Entering A New Era, ancient Indo-Iranic concepts such as Arta and Rta understood cosmic order as a unifying principle linking natural, social, and moral life. Contemporary ecological thinkers have similarly emphasized the need for a renewed sense of belonging within the Earth community.

On the contrary, the greatest challenge of the twenty-first century may be integrating scientific knowledge with deeper sources of meaning. Humanity already possesses many of the technical tools needed for sustainable development: renewable energy systems, advanced agriculture, circular economic models, artificial intelligence, and environmental monitoring technologies. What remains uncertain is whether societies possess the collective will to deploy these tools wisely and equitably.

Technological innovation answers the question of how. Spiritual and ethical traditions help answer the question of why.

History suggests that major social transformations rarely occur through technology alone. The abolition of slavery, the expansion of human rights, and the growth of democratic governance were driven not merely by institutional reforms but also by shifts in moral imagination. Likewise, a sustainable future may depend upon cultivating new forms of planetary consciousness that inspire cooperation across nations, cultures, and generations.

At the same time, a balanced assessment requires acknowledging limitations. Spiritual movements can sometimes become detached from practical realities, romanticize nature, or fail to translate ideals into effective policy. Sustainable development still requires rigorous science, sound governance, economic innovation, and institutional capacity. Spirituality cannot replace these necessities.

Yet neither can technological and political solutions succeed indefinitely in the absence of a compelling moral foundation.

Perhaps the most valuable contribution of Earth-centered spirituality is its ability to expand humanity's horizon of concern. It encourages us to think beyond quarterly profits, election cycles, and immediate self-interest. It reminds us that future generations are stakeholders in today's decisions. It invites us to view rivers not merely as water resources, forests not merely as timber reserves, and ecosystems not merely as economic assets, but as integral components of a living planetary community.

The emerging planetary era may ultimately require a synthesis of science, governance, economics, and spirituality. Sustainable development is not only about building greener infrastructure or designing smarter technologies. It is about reimagining humanity's place within the larger story of life on Earth.

In that sense, the phrase "The Earth Is Our Altar" is more than a poetic metaphor. It is an invitation to reconsider the foundations of civilization itself. If humanity comes to regard the Earth as sacred—not necessarily in a sectarian religious sense, but as a source of profound value and shared destiny—then sustainability ceases to be merely a policy objective. It becomes a cultural aspiration, an ethical commitment, and perhaps the defining civilizational project of our time.

Noosphere is the Earth beginning to think

In one of the luminous invocations of the Avesta, the ancient sacred texts of the Persian tradition, the voice of humanity rises not in conquest over nature, but in reverence toward it. The hymn unfolds as a litany of cosmic recognition:

“We worship all the waters…
We worship all plants…
We worship the whole earth…
We worship the whole sky…
We worship the stars, the moon, and the sun…
We worship all the endless lights…
We worship all living cattle…”

This is not merely ritual language. It is a worldview. The passage reveals an ancient Iranian cosmology in which existence itself is sacred, interconnected, and spiritually alive. Waters are not inert substances; they are beings worthy of reverence. Plants are not resources alone; they participate in the divine order. Earth and sky are not background scenery to human drama; they are dimensions of a living cosmos infused with meaning.

At the center of this vision stands one of the most profound concepts in the Avesta: Geush Urvan — the “Soul of the Cow,” or more deeply, the Soul of Living Creation.

To modern ears, the phrase may sound pastoral or symbolic in a limited sense. Yet in the Gathas of Zarathustra, Geush Urvan becomes something astonishingly universal. The “cow” is simultaneously literal and cosmic. It represents the vulnerable world of life itself: the innocent, the domesticated, the fertile Earth, the suffering biosphere. In one of the great mythic moments of the ancient world, the Soul of Creation cries out to Ahura Mazda against violence, disorder, and cruelty. The question is existential:

Who will protect creation?

The answer given is ethical rather than imperial. Humanity is not appointed master of the Earth, but guardian of Arta — truth, harmony, and cosmic order.

Here the Avesta anticipates an idea that modern civilization is only beginning to rediscover: that life possesses interiority. The world is not spiritually mute. Creation itself has voice, suffering, and dignity.

The linguistic roots deepen this insight. The Avestan word gąm derives from the ancient Indo-European root gʷōus, meaning cow or bovine life, linked to Sanskrit gauḥ, Persian gāv, Greek boûs, and even the English word “cow.” Yet the semantic field expands beyond livestock into something collective: animate earthly existence itself. Likewise, urvan does not simply mean “spirit” in a ghostly sense. It refers to enduring consciousness, a soul-principle that survives death and carries moral continuity.

Together, Geush Urvan becomes not merely “the soul of an animal,” but the spiritual individuality of living creation.

This ancient intuition bears striking resonance with one of the most ambitious ideas of modern thought: the Noosphere.

Developed by Vladimir Vernadsky and later expanded by Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, the Noosphere describes the emergence of a planetary sphere of thought surrounding the Earth. Just as the geosphere gave rise to the biosphere, the biosphere now gives rise to the sphere of reflective consciousness — humanity’s collective mind shaping planetary evolution.

The Avesta and the Noosphere emerge from radically different epochs, methodologies, and metaphysical assumptions. One belongs to sacred liturgy and mythic consciousness; the other to evolutionary science and systems theory. Yet beneath both lies a shared intuition:

The Earth is not dead matter.

For the authors of the Avesta, life itself cries out morally. For Teilhard, the Earth gradually awakens cognitively through humanity’s interconnected consciousness. One vision is sacramental and ethical; the other evolutionary and emergent. Yet both imply that humanity carries responsibility toward the destiny of life on Earth.

In this sense, Geush Urvan can be understood as an ancient archetype of planetary consciousness. It is not the Noosphere in scientific terms, but it anticipates the intuition that life forms a deeper unity — one capable of suffering, memory, and perhaps even awakening.

Modern ecological crises give this insight renewed urgency. Climate disruption, mass extinction, technological acceleration, and the fragmentation of human meaning all raise a profound question: can humanity evolve ethically as quickly as it evolves technologically?

The Avesta offers an answer that remains startlingly contemporary. Civilization survives not through domination alone, but through alignment with cosmic order — with truth, reciprocity, and reverence for life.

The hymn’s sequence itself is revealing. Waters, plants, Earth, sky, stars, moon, sun, endless lights, and living creatures are invoked together as a continuum. There is no sharp divide between matter and spirit, nature and morality, cosmos and consciousness. Everything participates in a sacred ecology.

Today, modern science increasingly echoes aspects of this ancient intuition. The Gaia hypothesis envisions Earth as a self-regulating living system. Panpsychist philosophers explore whether consciousness may be fundamental rather than accidental. Systems theorists examine how networks produce emergent intelligence. Digital civilization itself is creating proto-noospheric structures through global information systems and planetary communication.

And yet the Avesta contributes something many modern theories lack: moral depth.

The cry of Geush Urvan is not merely informational. It is ethical. The world suffers. Life seeks justice. Conscious beings bear responsibility.

A poetic synthesis of these two visions might read:

Geush Urvan is the soul of the living Earth crying out;
the Noosphere is the Earth beginning to think.

Between them stretches nearly three thousand years of human reflection. Yet both point toward the same possibility: that consciousness is not separate from the cosmos, but one of its deepest expressions — and that humanity’s future may depend on learning once again how to hear the voice of the living world.

BushidoMoon: Celebrating the Planetary Foresight Under the Full Moon

In a world speeding toward hyper-digitization and disconnection, we need not only new technologies—but new rituals. Rituals that reawaken our connection to nature, the cosmos, and each other. This is exactly what we’re beginning to cultivate through an initiative called BushidoMoon—an experiment in planetary consciousness, seasonal celebration, and bold human connection.

The inspiration began with the visionary ideas presented in the book Planetary Foresight and Ethics, which calls us to reimagine the future of humanity by re-aligning with the rhythms of the Earth and cosmos. The book urges us to embrace celestial observations, seasonal celebrations, and nature-connected practices as powerful ways to regenerate human meaning and solidarity in a time of planetary crisis.

After reading the book and connecting with its author, I suggested the use of the term Terran—as a poetic yet powerful way to emphasize our shared identity as beings of this planet. But the next question was immediate and practical: how do we find more Terrans? How do we build not just the thought leadership, but the action network for this emerging planetary culture?

As someone with an entrepreneurial mindset, I realized the need for more grassroots, embodied, and joyful expressions of the book’s deeper vision. That's when I proposed something deceptively simple: a full moon gathering, small at first, playful yet meaningful, rooted in nature and inspired by the ancient warrior code of Bushido.

BushidoMoon was born.

We alpha- and beta-tested the idea in tiny groups. But it was on our third try—at the Strawberry Moon in June 2025—that the magic really happened. Fourteen individuals, from a wildly diverse range of backgrounds, joined us under the moonlight in Bishop Garden, one of the most scenic and sacred-feeling places in Washington, DC.

We shared a potluck dinner amid blooming flowers, green grass, and a warm spring breeze. We laughed. We made toasts. We talked about nature, ethics, the cosmos—and the kinds of futures we want to live. The author of Planetary Foresight and Ethics joined us and shared how the book presents an alternative to globalization: a planetary vision that prioritizes human flourishing over economic competition, and cosmic connectedness over digital distraction.

We ended the evening with a Human Connection Circle. Each person spoke one word to describe how they felt at that moment. Then, spontaneously and joyfully—we howled at the moon. Why? Because this wasn’t about solemn ceremonies or rigid beliefs. It was about celebrating life boldly, together, in the spirit of play.

And that, too, is a vital insight from Planetary Foresight and Ethics: that creative play, including with technology and AI, is not frivolous. It is central to the preferred futures of humanity. As automation liberates us from traditional labor, we are called to explore creative complexity, to blur the lines between reality and virtuality, and to experiment with new ways of being human.

BushidoMoon is one such experiment.

It’s an invitation to reconnect—with yourself, with others, with nature, with the cosmos. It is tech-facilitated but grounded in in-person humanity. It is bold, weird, warm, and wildly needed.

Walter Truett Anderson on Culture, Evolution, Technology, Globalization, and Enlightenment

Walter Truett Anderson



Walter Truett Anderson, in a series of books over roughly a fifteen year period, developed a multi-faceted and relatively comprehensive theoretical analysis of contemporary trends and potential future directions for humanity. In his books, he has examined and synthesized such diverse topics as human belief systems, values, and culture; biotechnology and information technology; evolution and ecology; human psychology; society and globalization; Eastern and Western philosophy; and the past and potential future evolution of enlightenment. His most noteworthy books over this period include, Reality Isn’t What It Used To Be: Theatrical Politics, Ready-to-Wear Religion, Global Myths, Primitive Chic, and Other Wonders of the Postmodern World (1990), Evolution Isn’t What it Used to Be: The Augmented Animal and the Whole Wired World (1996), The Future of the Self: Inventing the Postmodern Person (1997), All Connected Now: Life in the First Global Civilization (2001), and The Next Enlightenment: Integrating East and West in a New Vision of Human Evolution (2003)

In Reality Isn’t What it Used to Be, Anderson presents the argument that in contemporary times there is a fundamental conflict and disagreement between absolutists and relativists regarding the nature of human knowledge and human values. The former believe that human knowledge and values are grounded in absolute and objective principles and facts; the relativists believe that knowledge and values are historically, culturally, and psychologically relative (or subjective). In essence, this is the conflict between fundamentalists (the absolutists) and Postmodernists (the relativists), though we could also include as absolutists those who believe that science provides objective and certain knowledge about reality. Anderson, in this book and later writings, clearly seems to side with the Postmodernists, at least to a degree. He does believe though, contrary to many Postmodernists, that there can be progress in the growth of knowledge.

In Evolution Isn’t What it Used to Be, Anderson argues that evolution is evolving and becoming purposeful with the introduction of biotechnology and information technology into the “augmentation” and enhancement of our species. In fact, he sees technology as permeating out into all aspects and dimensions of nature, including the monitoring and control of our environment. There can be no return to a pure or unspoiled nature. Biotechnology and information technology are increasingly intertwined and, following a similar line of thinking to Kevin Kelly, Rodney Brooks, and Andy Clark, Anderson sees a general blurring of the separation of life and technology. The whole wide world is becoming the “whole wired world.”

In The Future of the Self, Anderson picks up the Postmodern theme again, and presents the argument that the human self is a social construction, situational specific, and pluralistic, rather than singular and absolute. Anderson argues that given the complexity and rush of change in our contemporary world, a new type of self is emerging – one that is pluralistic and much more fluid. Anderson ties together human psychology, advances in the sciences, trends in culture and society, and the impact of technology on human life and the human mind, in creating a Postmodern vision of the self.

In an effort to be comprehensive regarding the nature of globalization, Walter Truett Anderson outlines a multi-dimensional theory in his book All Connected Now. Globalization is a multi-faceted phenomenon. Anderson not only discusses economic globalization, but also includes in his book treatments of cultural and political globalization; biological and ecological factors connected with globalization; the significance of the information network in the creation of a global society; the rise of global consciousness, increased human mobility and migration; and the huge growth in numbers of human organizations, and especially, international organizations. Anderson sees “a world of open systems” as the general theme running through all these dimensions of globalization. Anderson also highlights the strong technological dimension to globalization – a theme he carries forth from his earlier book on evolution. We are being wired together - the environment is being wired together as well. Anderson also reinforces and further develops his emphasis on the pluralistic and multicultural quality of our times – a theme he introduced in his earlier books on Reality and the Self. Although there is resistance to globalization, where some cultures and organizations wish to remain closed, according to Anderson, the overall world-wide trend is toward increasing openness and interactivity. In this respect, his view is similar to Friedman’s books on globalization.

Some of Anderson’s main arguments and hypotheses include: There is a general ongoing trend toward multiculturalism, in spite of efforts to preserve integrated pure cultures; the twentieth-century discovery of ecology and the interdependence of the earth, life, and humanity has intensified global consciousness; there has been a significant rise in international corporations and a reciprocal rise in global governance to control and monitor these corporations; there has been a globalization of human rights and human laws; the global society is an “open society” that emphasizes individual responsibility and choice rather than dictatorial rule; a “cosmopolitan citizen” has emerged who does not identify with any particular nation; and the global society is multi-centric with many centers of power. Anderson predicts a series of global societies in the future, as the human community struggles with the challenges and inherent conflicts brought on by globalization. In the coming century, the big issue is going to be globalization itself – its pros and cons.

One theme that runs through Anderson’s books is evolution; nature and human society is dynamic, changing, and developmental. Globalization has had a history which he traces in All Connected Now and in The Future of the Self, Anderson looks at the history and evolutionary development of the self. In fact, for Anderson, evolution is itself changing as conscious purpose and technology become increasingly important in human growth and change (See Evolution Isn’t What It Used To Be). In The Next Enlightenment, Anderson recounts the historical development of enlightenment in both Western and Eastern cultures. Evolution is perhaps the central theme in this last book, for Anderson believes that enlightenment is “an evolutionary project” – an expression of the dynamic and growth-oriented dimension of reality. And a key element in the state of enlightenment is seeing that all is flow – that all being is becoming.

For Anderson, enlightenment involves a liberation from the egocentric constraints of viewing ourselves as a singular and absolute, unchanging self. In The Future of the Self, Anderson critiques this limiting idea of the self. In The Next Enlightenment, Anderson goes further in arguing that the most important problem of our times is overcoming this constraining view of self-identity. War, conflict, indifference, and cruelty, all arise out of conceptualizing our identity, both individually and culturally, as bounded and singular entities. Within this mindset, we fail to see the “oneness” of all humanity and the “oneness” of ourselves and the universe; instead cultures and individuals segregate and oppose each other and humanity separates itself from nature. Enlightenment involves, as a central insight, the understanding and experience of oneness. In All Connected Now, Anderson highlights the importance of a growing sense of global consciousness and the theory of open systems (the interconnectivity of all things). In The Next Enlightenment Anderson discusses the idea of “cosmic consciousness” as an essential feature of enlightenment. It is important to see that enlightenment means freedom for Anderson. In his history of enlightenment, provided in the first part of his book, he reviews efforts through the ages to free the human mind from the cultural and psychological forces and assumptions that enslave and suppress us.

Anderson synthesizes a variety of ideas in his theory of enlightenment. He pulls together ideas from both the East and West. He sees a thematic connection between the Buddhist ideas of oneness and flow and the Western ideas of interdependency, interconnectivity, and evolution. He discusses “flow” and “transcendence” in the context of both the western psychology of Csikszentmihalyi and Eastern meditative practices. He sees the value of both rationality and intuition as paths to enlightenment. He supports the openness of New Age spirituality, but critiques the lack of epistemological standards in this movement. He rejects the professed certainty of fundamentalism and argues instead that a key feature of enlightenment is the courageous embrace of mystery and uncertainty in human existence. Identifying a series of “liberation movements” within human history, which include the European Enlightenment, Darwinian evolutionary theory, Freudian psychology, and the Human Potential movement of the 1960s, Anderson believes that enlightenment is a higher level of consciousness, enveloping and transcending earlier stages in the growth of the human mind, that was achieved by at least some people in the past. He anticipates increasingly more people achieving this state of consciousness and mentality in the future as an expression of the evolutionary development of humanity.
